Soy Arturo Guzmán, miembro del auto antiguo capítulo Morelos en México y soy un apasionado del los autos convertibles ingleses; acabo de terminar la restauración al 100% de un Triumph Spitfire 1500 Modelo 1975, puedes visitar mi sitio y ver la restauración completa.
Esta es la historia:
En Octubre de 2009 compré un Sunbeam Alpine Series 1 año 1960 para restaurarlo.
Al mes siguiente, un colega del club del auto antiguo capítulo Morelos me informó de una carrocería con suspensión de un Sunbeam Alpine en excelentes condiciones y sin óxido en venta en la Cd. De México.
Adquirí éste segundo Alpine con la idea de montar todas las piezas del Series 1 en él, pues la carrocería y suspensión estaban completamente oxidadas, picadas y en mal estado.
La única diferencia del segundo era que la forma plana de la cola correspondía a un series 3, 4 ó 5, así que iba a cortar las colas en ángulo del series 1 para soldarlas en él, pero me detuve al darme cuenta de que tenía un detalle muy raro: La entrada de la gasolina está ubicada en la posición del serie 1 y 2.
Decidí investigar el porqué de éste detalle tan raro y no encontré respuesta, así que decidí hacer un video y mandarlo por e-mail a todos los clubes de Sunbeam Alpine en el mundo para que alguien con más conocimiento me ayudara a identificarlo:

Otro detalle muy raro es que solo encontré un número de referencia grabado en una parte del auto pero le falta un número, lo que lo hace aún más extraño. El número es el B 909008 WRO.
Tiene entrada para las 3 barras en la parrilla y sin logotipo.
Como dato importante menciono que no existe ningún rastro de modificación: soldadura, uniones, adaptaciones ni por fuera ni por dentro de la lámina. Tengo un hojalatero con más de 35 años de experiencia y asegura que el auto es 100% original.

Arturo: Según mi opinión éste es un auto prototipo de transición del series 1 y 2 al 3, por lo que lo hace único en el mundo. Mi consejo es que contactes a un representante de Sunbeam Alpine en Mexico para que lo certifique y obtengas una carta notarial antes de que lo pintes para certificarlo y tendras un auto único en el mundo. Como verás coincide el codigo del serie II pero ese sufijo WRO me despista, porque según mis datos significa lo siguiente:
W..................... C.K.D. RHD export
R...................... Roadster
O...................... Standard equipment
Es conocido que el prototipo del tiger era con aletas largas (un alpine serie III realmente)
Quizas algún prototipo de transición elaborado para el mercado americano o algún carrozado, tiene tres laminas en la parrilla delantera o una con el logo de alpine en medio?

Hello Arturo,
This car is definitely an Alpine I or II because of the trunk. I believe someone customized the car by changing the peaked back fenders and changing the gas cap location. There should be some evidence of the work that they did.

You are missing one number but it sounds like a Series 1 produced the week of 27 June - 1 July 1960.
W= Complete Knock Down for Export (I think this means assembly was at destination outside UK) Right Hand Drive
R= Export
O= Standard
See if there is another 0 in Serial Number.
Very cool car. I have never seen an early model without the tall fins. There are people at the Sunbeam Alpine Owners Club who know much more than I. You should register, it does not cost anything.
You may have an unusual custom car. I am sure you will make it a beauty.

Ok, trunk & gas tank filler is from a Series I or 2, The tail lights are from a Alpine 4 or 5. Looks like someone put a car together from two ?
I'ts not a Series III as that had verticle gas tanks in the trunk.

This looks a modified early Alpine. The rear fenders have been modified by cutting back the original slanted lights to give a more later model year appearance ( ie tail lights vertical) but keeping the longer tail lights.
Suggest going back to the original design of the earlier Alpine. Someone from the various Sunbeam clubs will be happy to send you photos with measurements to get your project correct.

Thank you for email and photos. Your car does not look like any Alpine we know. Give us some more details and we will try to find out more about it.
Do you have a chassis or engine number? What do you know about the history of the car? Can you send some more photos of the back of the car, and measure the length of the hole for the back lights?
